Read on to learn more about the perks of getting your CBD oil straight from the source: you!

What is CBD oil?

CBD oil is a refined hemp extract that has been added to a carrier oil. Hemp is a variety of cannabis that produces only trace amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the cannabis component that can produce a psychoactive “high.” In fact, hemp is defined as having less than 0.3 % THC. Instead of producing THC, hemp plants contain mainly cannabidiol (CBD). Hemp has a long history of use for making fiber for textiles and rope, and has been bred to be tall and skinny with very small flowers, or buds.

Since dosage is different for everyone it’s helpful to be able to produce the volume of CBD oil that best suits your needs. Lastly, making your own CBD oil with ingredients you personally sourced means you avoid consuming the additives and refined oils that some commercial CBD oil suppliers add to their products.

Now that we’ve covered the benefits, let’s learn how to make CBD oil.

The explosive popularity of non-intoxicating cannabis products containing CBD has led to the development of a booming $1 billion industry. Those who seek CBD’s medical benefits can consume a diversity of CBD-infused foods, supplements, and drinks. CBD oil has been used to treat wide-ranging symptoms, such as pain, anxiety, depression, and acne.

CBD additives come in many forms, but all fall into three major categories: CBD oil, CBD-rich cannabis oil, and CBD isolate. While “CBD oil” and “CBD-rich cannabis oil” may seem like two words for the same product, they differ significantly, mainly due to the fact that two distinct kinds of cannabis are used to make each.

History of CBD oil laws

The Marihuana Tax Act of 1937 made all cannabis varieties, including hemp, completely illegal, but the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill legalized the cultivation of hemp for fiber, while also legalizing the extraction of CBD from hemp if the hemp was grown in accordance with the law. This bill led to the  rapid expansion of CBD products including oils, balms, creams, and gummies.. Interstate commerce of these products lies in a legal gray area because CBD and cannabis extracts are still considered a Schedule 1 narcotic, but the United States Drug Enforcement Agency has not enforced this regulation on businesses that sell CBD oil.

Recipes With Detailed Steps On How To Make CBD Oil At Home

Before attempting any of the recipes we outline below, you must ensure that you have well-preserved hemp flowers or cannabis buds. Ideally, the raw ingredients should have a high concentration of cannabinoid compounds. Focus on using organically grown plants that have not been exposed to any contaminants or unknown soil farmland. Remember that the more concentrated the cannabinoid compounds, the more potent your final product will be.

You should also ensure that you have all the supplies you’ll need for the preparation process. Though these will vary depending on your preparation method, there are certain universal supplies required for almost all CBD oil recipes. They include:

  • A slow-burning cooker
  • A double boiler (You can employ a makeshift model)
  • Glass bowl
  • A fine strainer
  • A cheesecloth
  • Non-aromatic kitchen papers, cotton fabric cloth or filter papers
  • A thermometer
  • A container with a lid to store your CBD oil once the preparation process is complete

It is also worth noting that the main step in the preparation process is using just-sufficient heat. The use of excess heat in the preparation process can kill certain cannabinoid compounds making your oil less potent. It also goes without saying that all preparation equipment should be clean in order to guarantee the purity of the final product.

Recipe 1: Making CBD Oil Using Coconut Oil

  • First cut the hemp flowers or cannabis buds into small pieces, then place them on a baking sheet. Place the sheet in an oven preheated to 250 degrees Fahrenheit, and allow to bake for around 27 minutes. This is the part of the process known as decarboxylation, during which we allow cannabinoid compounds to come to the forefront of your bud or flower.
  • Next, light your heater and place some water at the base of your double boiler. Add 1 cup of coconut oil to the upper level of the boiler, allowing it to melt gently.
  • Once the oil has melted, add around 10 grams of cannabis buds.
  • Continue heating the mixture of coconut oil and your primary ingredient over low heat. for up to one hour, occasionally stirring the mixture. Use the thermometer to ensure that the temperature of the mixture does not exceed 200 degrees Fahrenheit
  • After one hour, cover your strainer with a cheesecloth and gently strain the mixture until no oil is left. Remember, be careful: the mixture will be hot.
  • You can then transfer your CBD oil into a storage container and cork the lid strongly.
  • Store your oil in a cool and dark location.

Recipe 2: Making CBD Oil Using Olive Oil

  • First, add your hemp flowers or cannabis buds in a simple pot. Add water to cover the primary ingredient.
  • Next, slowly heat the mixture for around 10 minutes, using your lowest setting.
  • Remove your flowers and put them on a strainer, allowing the water to naturally evaporate.
  • Repeat the three procedures above until the water in the mixture you are heating does not have any color.
  • You should then remove the primary ingredient and re-sieve it (allowing the water to drain naturally). Once that step is complete, place your dried ingredient on a non-scented kitchen paper so that all water is filtered out.
  • Now, place the dry primary ingredient in the upper section of a double boiler, then add olive oil to cover.
  • Add water to the lower part of your double boiler.
  • Heat the double boiler for a few hours, keeping the mixture’s temperature at a steady 100 degrees Celsius
  • After around 3 hours, remove the mixture from the fire and strain the oil using a cheesecloth
  • Store your CBD oil in a cool and dark place.
